Why Convert Old Video or Media?

Many times while I’m talking to someone about media conversion, the first thing I hear is “It costs too much”. My feeling and response is It costs too much NOT to do it!

Many might ask how I can say that. That’s what I want to talk about.

I was recently reviewing a small mini-dv tape from my brothers family. Due to him being 6 years younger and me being away in the army we never really got close. By the time I got out of the Army he was living on the other side of the country and was busy with his family.

So while reviewing these converted videos of his I learned so much about a man I grew up with but didn’t really know.

I watched as my young nephew interviewed his dad for a School project. In the process I learned he played professional baseball for nearly. Years before an injury ended his career.

I watched my nephews as they played sports ( sometimes not so well!) and practiced music on many of the tapes. (He later went on to perform in the Carnegie Hall before graduating from High School.

All this while I knew my brother was a skilled musician but many families have someone who plays a guitar.

On several of the tapes I watched as he not only played several different guitars including a 12 string, but he sang too. And well!

Where was this all taking place? At a John Denver Reunion gathering in Aspen Colorado. He was performing in front of the audience and with other members of John Denver’s Group.

But here is the biggie. I spent a lot of my growing years with my Grandma on the farm in Minnesota. I was very close to her and she meant the world to me. I was devastated when she passed away.

As my brother performed, he came to a place in his performance where he announced he going to sing about Grandma Millie in a song he wrote.

Turn on the waterworks here. I lost it again…

So why talk to your family and friends about media conversion? Think about it.

Because I had my brother convert his old media, I learned: He played professional baseball for 4 years, his sons were athletes and musicians as well, my brother can sing and perform, and he writes many of his own songs. Oh, did I mention after his baseball career he became a commercial airline pilot?

If I had kept quiet about media conversion and not reviewed these videos I never would have known.
